Insult to Injury? Please!!

Sometimes, kids realize that I send home -with every child- my phone number so that if the need arises, parents may contact me. Rarely, do parents contact me, more often students do. I use Google Voice, the best Shadow phone in the world. Kids can text and email and whatever and it comes through my texts, but through a different number (one I can turn off!!). I can pretend I can’t see the texts or not, depending on what is said. Gotta admit, I’ve blocked kids before, for foolishness.

When a kid texts me a question like, “what do we wear to the concert tomorrow?” It’s a quick and easy, we’re done. Sometimes, it’s “Whatcha doing???๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜” and usually I’m like.”… Do your parents know you’re texting me emoticons? Yes? Okay.” Sometimes… It’s scary shit and I have to call the police. Which I have.

When it’s the “whatcha doing โ‰๏ธโ“โ—๏ธโ‰๏ธโ“๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜†” kind of stuff if I am not busy, totally happy to talk back, especially if the child has permission, if the child is appropriate, and the questions or remarks are not crazy personal. This is how kids talk nowadays, how they bond. As long as mom and dad know (I ask in person and I’ve called too ask parents directly), it’s cool. Yeah, it can be one of those gray areas in teaching but our county has no policy on texting probably because everyone is related (so serious).

Often my students share fun things, gossip, and naturally things about me. Like if they tell me if they liked a lesson, or ask how to do a rudiment or questions like, “do you have a Pinterest?!”

But when I receive texts like this:

Where yes, I am happy this student thinks I’m great (cause I am! I mean come on, my quirkiness knows no bounds!), I’m more excited about:

No I don’t want to be insulted every day. But I know who said that and I know why.

My friends I have arrived. I  officially an effective educator. I am not just “cool” cause I’m “young and understand stuff.” If you teach and all you are is “cool” it means you have no authority. It means you’re a buddy, it means you aren’t really reaching kids.
But! If the kids dread your return, those select few that don’t care about your class, and the good smart kids want you back- you are more wanted than a sub- this means you’re on the right track.

Oh yes, my cherub children, my angels I shall return….

When CDubs is better. Now if I can get that music class to feel like this instead… Oh well, you can’t have it all…..

(Doesn’t it make you want to wear large jewelry and nylon and buy a shag rug? Lol)
